Committee Selects Presidental Material

After a record number of nominations, the executive committee of the British Thong Society has decided to ask Mr. Chip Dale to become our new honorary president. Mr. Dale has led a highly prolific career as a dancer in Wales, twice being awarded the Golden Thong. The committee made specific reference to the way Mr. Dale has conducted himself, displaying the highest qualities as both a man and a professional in furthering the cause of thong wearing in the UK and abroad.

The committee will be contacting Mr. Dale in the coming days, asking him to take up the post.

Three other names have been selected from the short-list, and should Mr. Dale decline the offer, the honour will be passed to the next name in the list.

Soccer Thongs For East Europe

Last week's charity football match between a Thong Society 11 versus as team of Thong manufacturers ended with a 2-0 scoreline for our team. We'd like to congratulate the team and captain Dennis Murray, who scored the first goal and set up the second.

'This proves that the thong is as good as an atheletic support when worn correctly,' he told reporters for the Evening Standard, which ran a feature of the event in today's edition.

The football match was in aid of relief for the oldest manufacturer of thongs in East Europe, whose warehouse was recently destroyed in a fire. As guardian of the thong and g-string industry, the Society is forwarding £2,300 to the company as part of an aid package.

Hard Luck Henrietta

After three months of trying, Henrietta Tarbuck today finally announced that her attempt to walk the length of the country wearing only a thong and a digital wristwatch has ended in failure.

The plucky Society walker had reached Newcastle before her thong finally gave way early on Sunday morning, thereby bringing a premature end to what has been one of the Society's most ground breaking ventures.

'I wanted to prove that a single thong could go much further than any other type of underwear,' explained the valiant Henrietta. 'I think that's what I proved, by walking nearly one hundred miles further than the previous long distance thong walk.'

Meanwhile, Henrietta's father has been admitted to hospital after complaining that his bicycle seat had undone stitches from a recent operation. 'I thought a pair of Y fronts would hold everything in, he admitted. 'Now the doctors tell me that I should have been wearing something tight and minimal. I should probably have worn a thong.'

To Henrietta this is a good resolution, despite the early end of the walk. 'If father now admits that I'm wearing the best underwear possible, all this will have been worth it,' she said.

The Nominations Process

After Sir Thomas Jones’ death, the executive committee has decided to open the floor to nominations from outside the Society to become the new President. They have asked that all members now forward the names of suitable applicants before the 31st May. They remind all Society members that the person who takes this post should be forward thinking and represent the very best qualities of thong wearers in the UK.

All nominations should be sent to the Society at the above address, marking them ‘President Nomination’.

Funeral of Sir Thomas Jones

Members of the British Thong Society gathered in London, today, to mark the funeral of long standing Society Chairman, Sir Thomas Jones. In a moving tribute, members threw thongs on the hearse as it passed slowly into the church yard. In the service, earlier, a choir sang Sir Thomas' favourite hymns and current and past members of the BTS executive gave moving tributes to the man who served the cause of thongs for over half a century.

The executive committee will meet next week to discuss Sir Thomas's successor, but today wasn't a time for thinking about the future. It was about the past and all that Sir Thomas had done to take thongs from a minor form of underwear, to a position where it is now worn by kings, queens, and stars of the stage and screen.

Sir Thomas was 98 years old when he died, last week, after a long illness.

Obituary: Sir Thomas Jones

It’s with very great sadness that we announce the death of Sir Thomas Jones, the Thong Society’s honorary president. Sir Thomas died at his home in Kent after a long illness. I am sure we speak for all society members when we say that Sir Thomas will be greatly missed. He provided us with many years of loyal service.

May his buttocks be forever clenched.

The Annual Thong Dinner

The BTS will be opening its doors tonight to welcome guests to our annual dinner. This year, the meal will be followed by a speech by Dr. Hewson Clark, expert in underwear from the University of Dallas. We're honoured that Dr. Clark could spare time during his visit to the UK, and his paper 'The Strapless Thong: Myth or Manufacture' should be of interest to all who care about the thong.

There are still tickets available to members, who should email us their details, including membership number, to be sure of a reservation. Tickets are priced £24.50.

The BTS on Radio 4

Listeners to Radio 4 are in for a treat this afternoon. Our own vice chairman, Eliot Barnacle, can be heard discussing the work of the BTS on 'Down Your Way'. Mr. Barnacle, who kindly stepped in last week when Sir Jones was unable to be interviewed due to his recent poor health, talks about a wide range of subjects as the history of the BTS, the health benefits of thongs, and the work we're doing in third world countries.

The programme begins at 2.30pm.

Henrietta His Birmingham

Henrietta Tarbuck reached Birmingham today but has admitted her walk is much harder than she expected. 'The thong is holding up well,' she told us by telephone, 'but my father is already on his third pair of underpants. It really does go to show that when it comes to hard wearing underwear, you really can't go wrong with something that fits tightly between your cheeks.'

The trek began at Land's End in January and though she had been delayed, Herietta believes she will finish her walk before the end of next month.

Peel Memorial Service

Today in Knots End, Surrey, members of the British Thong Society will be laying a commemorative thong on the grave of Sir Henry Peel, founder of the BTS. This year's thong has been kindly provided by Mrs. Joan Karlin, who hand stitched Sir Henry's profile onto the silk pouch.

The service will be followed by a ball, in Sir Henry's honour, in the family home, led by a 'thong orchestra'.

Henrietta Tarbuck has started her sponsored trek from Land's End, today. Herietta has taken up the challenge as part of the Society's campaign to stamp out thong ignorance in Africa. Wearing only a thong and a digital watch, Herietta hopes to complete the marathon walk in three weeks. Accompanying her on the journey is her father, Terry, who will be following every inch of the way on a bicycle. Unlike his daughter, Terry has admitted that he will be wearing a normal pair of Y fronts.

'I'd be more than happy to support the cause of the thong,' he said, ' but the doctor has warned me against chafing due to a recent operation.'

UPDATE: An Evening With English Thongs

Recent promotion of novelty thongs in the UK has been drawn to the attention of the British Thong Society. It is clear that the display of this kind of underwear can be detrimental to the long term goals of our society. Although the Society works hard to educate the country as to the healthy benefits to be had by wearing thongs, it is clear that much work has yet to be done to bring thong wearing into the mainstream of British society.

Accordingly, the executive committee of the British Thong Society is today issuing a press release. in relation to the manufacture of comedy thongs.

It reads:

Members of the British Thong Society would like to make it clear that we condone the wearing of comedy thongs. It is the long held view of the Society that publicity relating to thongs in the shape of chickens, snakes, and hairy lemmings, does not accurately represent the views of sensible thong wears in the UK.

Furthermore. In our fight to get the thong recognised as a sensible underwear, we do not think it right to promote, sell, or manufacture items of clothing that do not further that aim. We would like out membership to boycott these novelty thongs and to encourage their friends and family to do likewise. Thongs have been long known to have many medical benefits and reducing them to the things of cheap and vulgar jokes does nothing but mock wearers everywhere.

New Year

Exhibition Request

We've had an email from Society member Ken Moore wanting to know if we have any plans to organize another museum exhibition.

The last one, 'A Brief History of Thongs', received such glowing reviews when the V&A agreed to our using one of their annexes that we've had dozens of such requests in the last year. Unfortunately, Dr. Koike, who organized the exhibition, has now returned to the University of Tokyo after his year spent at Kings College. If we could find an equally knowledgeable academic to act as curator, a new exhibition might be possible. As it is, the amount of work we'd need to do to contact the owners of the thongs used in the show means that it's impossible for any of full time Society staff to manage it.

The Thong Journal

The latest edition of The Thong Journal has come back from the printers and we will be sending it out to Society members in the next few days. The journal is a bumper edition this year, with seventeen articles and dozens of reviews of the latest in thongs. We also have a special interview with TV actor David Jason on why he became a late convert to the thong. It also has the usual competitions, prize drawers, and reports of thong-related events across the country.

For non-members, the Journal is priced £8.00 and can be purchased by writing to the Society at the above address.

Subscription Renewal Notice

Membership subscriptions are to rise by £2 this year, the first rise in nearly a decade. Members are advised to get their subscriptions in as soon as possible as we’re currently dealing with a backlog in applications after a huge rise in interest in thongs after Peter Goyle's excellent series of documentaries.

From October 2006, a year's membership to the society is now £22, which includes two copies of The Thong Journal and conference fees for the yearly Thong Conference.

Thong Documentary

Thong wears might be interested in a documentary to be shown tonight at 9.30pm on UK Horizons. The programme is presented by a name, well known to Society members. Peter Goyle has worked for twenty years in researching the trends of underwear and is one of the world's foremost experts in g-strings, thongs, and posing pouches. The programme, entitled 'Thong World', explores the relationship between thong wearing and neo-liberal values since the end of the second world war.

Anybody with an interest in thongs would advised to tune in. We are yet to determine if the programme will be available on DVD.

Bring and Buy Sale

The Sunderland branch of the British Thong Society will be holding a bring and buy sale at 7pm in St. David's Church, Fernly Street, on 14th September. If you have any old thongs or duplicates in your collection, you might like to take them along and see what price you can get for them.

Ron Jones, the regional chairman of the association, promises that this year's sale will be bigger than the one they held in 2006. 'We've got double the number of stalls and have organised entertainment with a local pensioners dance troup on hand to show us their moves.'

Devon Conference

Obituary: Charles Henry Lowds

It's with sad news that we report the death of Charles Henry Lowds, who for 57 years, was the Society's treasurer.

Henry was a popular figure in the society and one of the most devote believers of thong health. After making his fortune in India during the 1950s, Henry returned to the UK where he devoted his time to the cricket, and his love of horses. His loss will be felt by the world of champion hunt racing as it will by the thong world.

He was wearing his favourite Indian three piece thong right up to the moment of his death, aged 97. He will be buried in Stonelow Parish Church, this Monday, wearing his favourite thong and holding a jockey's whip.

He will be sorely missed.

Thong Show

Margaret Royce has emailed us to ask that we help promote her display of West Country thongs which she'll be putting on show at East Lowstead Church Hall on March 14th. As you might know, Margaret has been collecting thongs for nearly fifty years and currently owns a collection of 700. The display covers the pre-war years and will be a rare opportunity for thong lovers to inspect a 1931 g-string thought to have been owned by Bix Beiderbecke.

Tickets are priced at 50p with the proceeds going to the Society's appeal to help send thongs to Africa.

The Devon Thong Conference

This year’s Thong Conference will be held in Devon from 19-22 July. The conference is being held in the quiet Gormley Manor hotel, which includes spacious grounds and a private beech were thong wearers can be sure to fine a relaxing time.

The conference fees are £245 including full bed and board. This year we’ve got an particularly good range of speakers to talk about thong related subjects, and the conference will also be playing host to the usual displays of thongs from both leading and specialty manufacturers. This year we’ll also be catering for blind members with our special ‘Best Dressed Guide Dog’ competition.

Thongs in Winter

Given the extent of the cold this February, we would like to remind all members that the winter is the best time for wearing your thermal thongs.

In addition, we will be sending out advice packs to all our membership to help you during these cold months. Thong wearing in winter, while perfectly safe, does require certain precautions to prevent cold in the lower back and kidneys. If any non-member would like more advice, please send a self-addressed envelope and stamp to the Society, marking your letter 'Winter Thongs'.

Sir Henry Remembered

On this day, each year, members of the British Thong Society lay a commemorative thong on the grave of Sir Henry Peel, who founded the BTS in 1912. This year's service, in Knot's End, Surrey, will see a thong donated by current honorary chairman, Sir Thomas Jones, who will read a verse specially written by Mrs. Anne Somes, who, as a child, knew Sir Henry.

Welcome to our new look website. While the complications of our domain registration is being sorted, we've moved to this blogger account to keep you all up-to-date with the lastest goings on within the Society.
